Speed Up The Shut Down Time in Windows 7 : Do it Manually Or Automatically

Sometimes you might feel that your Windows 7 is taking so long time to shut down. Well, it’s a regular problem and I am facing it now. So I searched for a solution, found one and then apply it. It now, after testing for 56 boot ups, its working, actually working great, for me. So here I am showing you how. Windows may take long time to shut down. The usual reason is, it tries to save all of your data so that you might not loose anything. That’s why it take backup of every single processes before a shut down. That occurs “x Programs still need to close” dialog during a shut down. Isn’t it annoying? Thing about a single case, you are working with your PC and it’s not good enough to take a power failure. So you use a U.P.S. But an U.P.S will serve for a little time and you need to shut down your PC before it get down. So if it takes 5-6 mins only to shutdown, then, yeah that’s a horrible experience. So let’s learn how to deal with this problem. Here I will show you two ways. 1st is automatic One-Click action by a microscopic script (<400 Bytes). You can also step backward with another similar script. And the 2nd process is Manual. It is recommended if you can do it, to prevent any wrong move. So let’s go.

Using a REG File Download

1. Click here and download the file.

2. Open the .zip file and extract the .reg file to the desktop.

3. Right click the .reg file (On Desktop) and click on Merge.

6. Click on Run, Then press Yes, again Yes, and at last OK when prompted.

 

If you want to step back word and restore the Default Shut Down Time, download another file from here and do as above.

Manually in Registry Editor

1. Open the Start Menu and then Open “Run”.

2. In the “Run” box, type “regedit” and press Enter.

3. In “regedit” go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control

4. In the right pane, right click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and click on Modify. (See screenshot above)

5. Type in a number between 2000-20000 (2-20 seconds) and click on OK. (See screenshot below)

NOTE: The default time is 12000. I use 2000 (2 seconds) and have not had any problems. Your experience may vary.

6. Close regedit.

NOTE: If you have problems with programs from your computer shutting down to quickly, then repeat the above steps and increase the time (step 5) a bit.

This tips is quiet easy and simple then the previous trick. Here we will create a shortcut and we can be able to shutdown Windows instantly using that shortcut. So let’s get started.

1. Right click on a empty area on desktop, and click on New and Shortcut.
   
   


2. Now For a Instant Shut Down Computer Shortcut
   
   
   • Type the location below into the location area, and click on the Next button.

     
     shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f

     
     
     
     
   
   
   • Now give that shortcut a name and click Finish.
     
     
   
   
   
   


3. Now For a Shut Down Computer Shortcut with a Specified Time-Out Period

   • Type the location below into the location area, and click on the Next button.
   
   
   • Paste the following code on the “Type For Location Of The Items” bar.

     
     shutdown.exe -s -t ## -f

     
     FOR EXAMPLE: Replace ## with the second value you want to wait before Shutting Down. I would type this below exactly to have a 20 second time delay.

     
     shutdown.exe -s -t 20 -f

     
     
     
     
   
   
   
   


4. Right click on the new Shut Down Computer shortcut on the Desktop and click on Properties.
   
   
   • Click on the Shortcut tab, then click on the Change Icon button. 
     
     
   
   
   • Now select the ShoutDown icon from that list an press OK. Then Apply and OK the settings.

performance. You have to accept it. You cannot expect that it will keep
you a steady service forever. And sometimes, you need to replace it with
a new one. It's natures law and you cannot deny (although it is a
"Thing" but yet it's true). But you can make some tweaks and follow some
guidelines to make your PC last long and give you a better performance.
Today we will learn how to Turn Off Disk Defragmenter Schedule, By
default Disk Defragmenter is scheduled to run in the background
automatically every so often in Windows 7. Having this running in the
background can cause a slight slow down and extra hard drive activity.
You should either set the schedule to run at a time when you are not
using the computer while it is on, or turn it off and run Disk
Defragmenter manually when it is convenient for you instead.

1. Open the Start Menu, and click on All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Defragmenter. (See screenshot below)

A) Go to step 3.

OR
2. Open the Start Menu, then type dfrgui into the search line and press Enter.

To Turn On the Disk Defragmenter Schedule

A) Click on the Turn on schedule button. (See screenshot below)

B) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes (if administrator) or type in administrator's password (if standard user).

C) Check the Run on a Schedule box. (See screenshot below)

D) Choose the frequency, day, time, and disks to be used for the schedule. (See screenshot above)

E) Go to step 5.

To Turn Off the Disk Defragmenter Schedule

A) Click on the Configure schedule button. (See screenshot below)

B) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes (if administrator) or type in administrator's password (if standard user).

C) Uncheck the Run on a Schedule box. (See screenshot below)

5. Click on OK. (See screenshot above or below step 3C)
6. Click on the Close button. (See screenshot below step 3A or 4A)
